The Armed Services YMCA (ASYMCA)
The Armed Services YMCA (ASYMCA) is a top-rated, 501(c)(3) military nonprofit organization designed to make military life easier. They provide hands-on, innovative, specialized programs and support services to military service members and their families with a particular focus on junior-enlisted men and women — the individuals on the front lines of defending our nation. Programs are offered at no or low cost and require no dues or membership- if they carry an active-duty or dependent ID card; we consider them to be part of the Armed Services YMCA Family.
Today, the ASYMCA is a proud partner and national member association of the YMCA of the USA. The ASYMCA operates more than 150 program centers nationwide, working closely with the Department of Defense and military bases on the ground. The possibility of expansion into geographical areas where there are unmet needs always exists, and there is no effort to compete with other support agencies. Where there is a need, we try to meet it in cooperation with the installation commander, and strong partnerships with other non-profits, such as: the YMCA, Operation Homefront, the USO, the Sierra Club, and Newman’s Own, so that we can remain a top-rated, effective and fiscally responsible military charity that is ranked to be among the top 2% of Charities nationwide by Charity Navigator in 2012.
At its 33 branches and affiliate locations, the ASYMCA offers unique essential programs such as childcare, hospital assistance, spouse support services, food services, deployment support, emergency support, computer training classes, counseling, wounded warrior support, health and wellness services, and holiday programs that are tailored to the specific needs of the military community on the local level. In addition to these locations, the ASYMCA and its programs are implemented by partners at ten affiliated community YMCAs, as well as nine Department of Defense affiliates worldwide, that have large military communities and are able to benefit from ASYMCA programming.
The Wounded Warrior Project
The Wounded Warrior Project is a nonprofit organization whose stated mission is to “honor and empower wounded warriors” of the United States Armed Forces. “The Wounded Warrior Project (WWP) works to raise awareness and enlist the public’s aid for the needs of severely injured service men and women, to help severely injured service members aid and assist each other, and to provide unique, direct programs and services to meet their needs.”
Wounded Warrior Project (WWP) began when several veterans and friends, moved by stories of the first wounded service members returning home from Afghanistan and Iraq, took action to help others in need. What started as a program to provide comfort items to wounded service members has grown into a complete rehabilitative effort to assist warriors as they recover and transition back to civilian life.
